'You Can't Unring the Bell': Why Did Buzzfeed Publish Unverified Trump Dossier? -

Buzzfeed is under fire for choosing to publish a 35-page report containing unverified claims about ties between President-elect Donald Trump and Russia.

The secret dossier contained explosive allegations, including that Russia had gathered compromising information on Trump.

At a news conference this morning, Trump called the report "fake news" and refused to allow a CNN reporter to ask a question because of the network's reporting on the dossier.

Buzzfeed editor-in-chief Ben Smith defended the decision, arguing that Americans should be able to read it and decide for themselves.
Many other news outlets, including the New York Times, refused to publish the dossier because the information could not be corroborated.

Trump's Press Secretary Sean Spicer blasted Buzzfeed this morning, calling the organization a "left-wing blog" that put out the report to "get clicks."

On "Outnumbered" this afternoon, the hosts discussed Buzzfeed's decision and the role of the media.

Eboni Williams said she disagrees with Buzzfeed's argument about simply putting information out there and letting the public decide.

She said it puts the American people in an "unfair position."

"You cannot unring the bell. When you put certain images, things, [or] speculations out there and it's unverified and you acknowledge you can't verify it, you can't stand behind it, what are we really expecting Americans to do around that?" she asked.

Bret Baier said there is a "major pushback" by Trump and his team against some media organizations right now, but reporters "have to be able to ask tough questions and get the answers."
