Protests, barricades and violence in Venezuela: A special report -


Protesters have told Sky News Venezuela is heading for civil war as tensions build ahead of Sunday's controversial vote to rewrite the constitution.

Money and food are short in the country, and Sky News has witnessed people picking through rubbish to survive.

Anti-government protests in the capital of Caracas have left at least 100 people dead since March.

Protesters are opposed to President Maduro, whose strict socialist policies have caused a humanitarian crisis.

Maduro is holding a referendum to try to overhaul Venezuela's constitution, put in place by his predecessor Hugo Chavez. His opposition are fighting against this.

Venezuela has world's largest oil reserves and this deepening crisis could send oil prices soaring and leave its people starving.

Our Chief Correspondent Stuart Ramsay reports from the capital Caracas.
